ADAC TruckService and Bosch Service Solutions formed an alliance last week in Karlsruhe to tackle the shortage of truck parking facilities. The partners are calling on companies that have restricted areas of land near motorways and highways to open them up as secure truck parking spaces. As the main contact for interested site owners in Europe, ADAC TruckService will check whether a suggested site is suitable for use. It will organise security features and link the sites to the recently launched Bosch Secure Truck Parking booking platform.
“Politicians have achieved a great deal in recent years, but it is the logistics industry itself that holds the key to permanently solving the problem of truck parking. Companies that make unused sites available as parking facilities are not only helping to combat the lack of parking spaces, they are also benefiting from it,” said Christoph Walter, Chairman of the Management Board of ADAC TruckService in Laichingen.
According to the Federal Ministry of Transport, there is a shortage of 14,000 truck parking spaces in Germany alone – and the number is increasing rapidly. The lack of parking, especially in secure facilities, has consequences: TAPA EMEA (Transported Asset Protection Association Europe) reports that total losses resulting from cargo theft in Europe amount to over EUR 16 billion per year.
“Accidents caused by sleep-deprived drivers and incorrectly parked vehicles, more fuel consumed in the search for empty parking spaces, cargo theft and accidents on non-monitored sites – these all damage the image of the whole industry. We are not prepared to resign ourselves to this situation so we are joining forces to encourage the logistics industry to support the idea of secure parking,” said Dr Jan-Philipp Weers, head of Bosch Secure Truck Parking.
Bosch secure parking adopts the sharing economy approach and is similar to a hotel booking platform. For example, businesses can register company parking spaces or haulage yards on the portal. An app notifies dispatchers and drivers of empty parking spaces and the amenities they have. The security ranking provides detailed information about the security system in place at a parking lot. Reservations are free and the owner of the site sets the parking charges. Payment is made upon receipt of an invoice. The charges are settled online with the haulage firm at the end of the month, which means drivers do not have to carry cash.
Companies that want to make additional use of their sites can register with ADAC TruckService by calling the hotline on +49 (0)7333 808 174. Ideal sites are those that are close to motorways with ground that is suitable for trucks, sanitary facilities and a minimum of five parking spaces. If the site already has secure access, video surveillance and a 24-hour reception, all that is required is a connection to the booking portal. Parking spaces that are not yet secured can usually be upgraded with a suitable access control system within a day. Number plate recognition at the entrance and exit and a comparison of the vehicle registration number with the booking details ensure that only trucks registered on the platform can drive onto the site. Services also include video surveillance and a terminal with a voice connection to the Bosch security control centre, with virtual security patrols included.
